Een van de grootste sociale problemen in de hotelsector is mensenhandel. Mensenhandel is het gebruik van geweld, fraude of dwang om mensen uit te buiten en winst uit hen te persen. Het kan de vorm aannemen van dwangarbeid, seksuele uitbuiting, drugssmokkel of zelfs schuldslavernij. Activistische organisaties zoals het Polaris Project schatten dat er in 2021 minstens 27,6 miljoen mensen tegen hun wil verhandeld zijn. Het is alarmerend dat het aantal gevallen van mensenhandel tussen 2016 en 2021 met 12% is gestegen, zo blijkt uit het rapport. Marriott introduceerde in 2016 een bewustwordingsprogramma voor mensenhandel, dat werknemers traint in het herkennen van mogelijke signalen van mensenhandel, het monitoren van situaties en het handelen of rapporteren daarover, terwijl ze hulp bieden aan slachtoffers. Het programma streeft ernaar dat al het personeel van de hotelketen in 2025 aan deze opleidingseisen voldoet in de 8.200 locaties in 138 landen wereldwijd.
