INTERNET ADDICTION
copyright Stichting The Unicorn Foundation 18 January 2007.

Our findings based on a few possibly serious cases of internet addiction showed the following symptoms.

More or less complete loss of sense of (continuous) time behind the screen. Time behind screen can exceed 12 hours a day . . .

Early morning first arousal impulse (relevant cognitive arousal) : Go online .

Unaware of developing symptoms of constrained postures .

Ultimately this can result in a sudden "brain insult" like collapse , with dizziness, incontinence and loss of consciousness as first indication of a serious condition .

Edema of lower extremities ( e.g. the feet) as a consequence of prolonged periods in a sitting position .

The early morning after the insult subject wakes up with complete hallucination of sitting behind his computer with his relevant screens in front of him to the smallest details (and going through his standard routines). This can go on for some days .

There may be subsequent serious pains (back ,shoulders) lasting for weeks .

After the incident subject may initially have an increased awareness of screen time and switch of after an hour or so .

But after his symptoms decrease the old habits start coming back .

Senior citizens may be more vulnerable for the (serious) symptoms as described above . It may help their junior brothers to know what could happen to the future generation . . .

One problem that could complicate things : working on-line (e.g. complex web-site maintenance) could become a persons major purpose in life . . .but could also become his cause of death . . . impossible odds again . . . ?
